The summer holiday camp : a school of life

When I go away on a summer holiday camp for a few days to the beach or to the mountains, I always experience a very particular emotion! This holiday time is a real present for our Faith and Light Communities, but it is also much more, it’s a school of life.

At the camp, we live together for a few days in a atmosphere similar to that of a family, where there are children, young people, adults, and even grand parents. We learn to listen to each other, work in a team, forgive each other. We learn to know our own limits and we discover how much we need God and other people. We learn to appreciate small details, and there are so many! We live in joy, and a good mood.

One day, we went to the beach. We sang songs accompanied by guitars, we danced and take advantage of the sunny weather. When we came back, the mothers in the group told us “Why didn’t we do this kind of thing when we were young ? We missed out on so many things”. But it is never too late.

At the camp; creativity and imagination are in full flow : we can be transformed into pirates, sailors, Medieval knights, goblins, Greeks, Romans, Indians, rock stars etc, we cross the seas, battle against dragons, ogres and monsters. We discover treasures, go on conquests against lost civilizations.

But the most essential thing is not there : at the camp we learn to find God in each person and in each thing, in a smile, a song, a prayer, even in the conflicts and difficulties which are always an occasion for growth and learning. The Eucharist confirms to us how much the community is constructed upon Jesus and by Jesus. We discover above all the unique value of each person, that we can be happy with so little (things as well as comfort!) Together we make things possible, which would be impossible for one person alone.
“Why can’t the camp last forever?”
