Since January 1939, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity invites all members of the Churches to pray for an end to the divisions between Christians. This year, the week has a particular theme. The 50th anniversary of the death of Father Paul Couturier is being celebrated. This priest from Lyon had a determining influence on the evolution of ecumenism and the organisation of the Week of Prayer for Unity. This week is prepared every year by an international interdenominational commission emanating both from the pontifical Council for promoting Christian unity and the ecumenical Council of the Churches. For 2004, the meditation proposed, notably by an ecumenical group from Syria, is extracted from Jesus’s farewell speech to his disciples in the Gospel of Jean Chapter 14, verses 23 to 31.
