''Through his very presence the Pope is a sign of holiness'' affirms Jean Vanier

“Through his very presence the Pope is a sign of holiness” affirms Jean Vanier. Jean Vanier the founder of Faith and Light and l’Arche, interviewed by Radio Vatican on the possible resignation of the Pope, replied:

“John Paul II is the Pope; it’s up to him to decide. When he was asked if he was thinking of resigning, he replied “Did Jesus want to come down from the cross?”
The Pope is a man who is suffering: he is suffering physically and I think that he’s also suffering terribly in his heart. However, at the same time, there is something extraordinarily luminous and limpid within him. The Pope is a sign of what being a Christian is. Today, mankind is in an exceptional state of poverty. Christians are often in a state of poverty. Jesus asks each one of us to believe, that, in the face of so much suffering in the world, He is present and He invites us to trust Him and to grow in that trust.

Today the Pope, more than any encyclical, more than any other written text, is a sign of holiness through his very presence. Today the world has an even greater need of “God’s athletes”: men and women who like John Paul II, accept the mystery of their everyday existence. St. Paul said “my strength shows itself through my weaknesses."
this is exactly what the Pope is going through at this time”.
