The bishops at the Synod participate in a day with Faith and Light communities

Everyone invited!

When I learned about this opening meeting of the fifteen Faith and Light communities of Rome, the thought came to me that it would be a good gesture to let the members of the Synod know about it. I was touched by the almost immediate response of the community leaders faced with this bold suggestion, which was going to seriously upset their programme. We had only a short week in which to arrange it. Mgr Nikola Eterovic, Secretary to the Synod, kindly consented to allow an invitation and a leaflet on Faith and Life being given to each member of the Synod. Practically all had previous engagements already, but many expressed their thanks, their regrets, and also their interest in the movement, either in learning of its existence, or that they knew of it already through the Faith and Light communities in their countries. Four bishops replied « yes »: Mgr Gabriel Piroird, Bishop of Constantine and Hippo (Algeria), Mgr Tesfay Medhin, Bishop of Adigrate (Ethiopia), Mgr Menghistead Tessamariam, Bishop of Asmara (Eritrea) and Mgr Theotonius Gomes, titular Bishop of Zucchabar, auxiliary Bishop of Dhaka (Bangladesh). This last bishop got to know Faith and Light thirteen years ago at the Lay Synod and initiated the movement in his country. At the meeting, he was accompanied by three seminarists from his own country and eight nuns. I was very impressed at seeing how aware the bishops were of the links of simplicity and trust uniting us in Faith and Light.

Marie-Hélène Mathieu.
