Brothers and sisters

"The brothers and sisters of the people with an intellectual disability are called to appreciate that a person with a disability can be a source of life and unity; if this person disrupts their life, he/she can also transform and transfigure it." (Charter I)

I wanted to understand the mystery

I became very close to Matthias when he was 18.
Before that, I cared for him a lot but I suffered because of his disability. I wanted to understand the mystery.
When Matthias turned 18, I had a very strong awakening. I realised that I had a brother who was becoming an adult, that I was living with him but that I knew nothing about him, nothing about what he was going through inside! It was a big shock.
So I decided to go on holiday with him, away from the family. We went to Kinnor, a holiday camp for people with disabilities.
I said to Matthias: "Matthias, I came here for you, because I want to get closer to you. But maybe you don't want to have your sister on your back all the time. So I will take care of other people. But if you want, you can always come to me. I am here for you."
This camp was a total turnaround for me, on many levels. And in particular, I discovered that people with intellectual disabilities live for love.
During the camp, one day when I was in the garden, Matthias came up to me and suddenly hugged me very, very hard. I was overwhelmed! Matthias had understood me! From that moment on, we became very close. We developed a very deep relationship, with another language, the language of the eyes, of the senses, of presence. I realised that Matthias was a gift, that he had been sent by God for us. I stopped trying to penetrate the mystery.
I began to welcome him.
